Earthquake: 5.8 magnitude quake jolts Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region; tremors felt in Delhi-NCR
PTC Web Desk: An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 jolted Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region on Saturday. Tremors were also felt across parts of northern India, including Delhi-NCR and the Kashmir Valley. The earthquake occurred at 12:17 pm IST at a depth of 86 km, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The epicentre lies in a seismically active zone along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, which frequently experiences tectonic shifts. The tremors were mild to moderate in intensity but caused panic among residents in affected areas.
In Srinagar, people were seen rushing out of buildings as the ground began to shake. “I felt the tremor while I was at work—my chair started moving. It wasn’t too strong, but it was definitely noticeable,” said a local resident. Videos circulating from Kashmir showed ceiling fans swaying and people evacuating buildings as a precaution.
Tremors were also reported in several parts of Delhi-NCR, prompting temporary evacuations in offices and residential complexes. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage on either side of the border.
Earlier this week, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, also causing tremors in parts of northern India. That quake occurred at a depth of 75 km and was powerful enough to raise concerns about potential damage in proximity to the epicentre.
The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, though no emergency measures have been activated as of now. Residents in quake-prone areas are advised to remain alert and follow safety guidelines during seismic events.
