'Dukandaari hi krni hai': Piyush Goyal slams startup ecosystem, stresses on technological progress
PTC News Desk: Union minister Piyush Goyal has taken a sharp dig at the start-ups ecosystem of the country while questioning their efficiency. He said that while most of the youth in the country is focused on food delivery, betting and fantasy sports app, those in China were working on EV, battery tech, semiconductors and AI.
While speaking at the Startup Mahakumbh on Thursday, he questioned that whether they are content with having low-paying jobs which ultimately benefit the rich rather than striving for technological advancements. 'Sirf Dukandaari hi krni hai,' he said.
According to government data, India is the third-largest startup hub, with over 100 unicorns. Around 1.57 lakh startups are recognised by the government.
"What are India's startups of today? We are focused on food delivery apps, turning unemployed youths into cheap labour so the rich can get their meals without moving out of their house," Goyal said.
The Commerce Minister emphasised that new start-ups should focus on preparing the nation for the future. "I feel sad when I come to know that for Rs 25 lakh or Rs 50 lakh, a bright idea of a young start-up got sold to a foreign company," he further said.
