Dera chief Ram Rahim stirs row, claims cricketer Virat Kohli took 'Gurumantra' from him

PTC Web Desk: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, currently serving a life sentence, has claimed that Indian cricketer Virat Kohli received spiritual guidance (Gurumantra) from him. Addressing an online congregation from the Sirsa dera, Ram Rahim claimed that Virat Kohli visited the sect in 2010 and had earlier come in 2007-08.

"He later took Gurumantra. Several other cricketers have also sought spiritual guidance," he said. The dera chief further claimed that during a cricket match held at the dera, some Pakistani players also followed the teachings despite being Muslims.

Ram Rahim has earlier made similar claims. Around eight years ago, he stated that players such as Kohli, Zaheer Khan, Shikhar Dhawan, and Yusuf Pathan had trained under him. He alleged that he possesses video evidence of their training but added that it is up to the players to acknowledge it or not.

Ram Rahim is serving a life sentence in Rohtak’s Sunaria jail for the sexual assault of female followers and the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati. He was released on a 30-day parole on January 28, with the government permitting him to stay at the Sirsa Dera, from where he has been delivering virtual sermons.

His release has sparked political speculation, as it coincides with the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 5. Additionally, Haryana is expected to announce municipal elections soon after, raising concerns over the timing of his parole.

Ram Rahim has been sentenced to life imprisonment in three cases, including sexual assault and murder. However, he was acquitted in the murder case of Dera manager Ranjit Singh by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The CBI has challenged this acquittal in the Supreme Court, which has issued a notice to him.
