Delhi-NCR enforces stricter GRAP stage-4 measures as air pollution worsens

PTC Web Desk: Delhi-NCR has implemented Stage-4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to combat escalating air pollution levels, triggered by unfavourable meteorological conditions and increasing emissions.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced the enforcement of stricter anti-pollution measures due to hazardous air quality. Factors such as vehicle emissions, paddy-straw burning, dense fog, and low temperatures have contributed to Delhi’s worsening air quality during winter.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 396 on Wednesday, nearing the 'Severe' category (401-500). As per the Supreme Court's guidelines, GRAP Stage-3 measures are triggered at an AQI of 350, while Stage-4 comes into effect when AQI crosses 400.

Between January 14 and January 15, AQI surged from 275 to 393 by 5 pm and further to 396 by 6 pm. Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) indicate that AQI levels may exceed 400 soon.

Measures under GRAP Stage-3 and Stage-4

To address the crisis, CAQM has enforced a nine-point action plan under GRAP Stage-3 and a seven-point plan under Stage-4. Measures include restrictions on construction activities, curbs on vehicle movement, and enhanced checks on industrial emissions. State Pollution Control Boards (PCBs) and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) have been directed to ensure immediate and stringent implementation of these measures.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, especially during early mornings and evenings, when pollution levels are at their peak. The authorities urged people to use public transport to reduce vehicle emissions and support efforts to improve air quality.
