Delhi HC Judge Yashwant Varma relieved of duties after cash seizure at residence
PTC Web Desk: The Delhi High Court has withdrawn all judicial responsibilities from Justice Yashwant Varma following the discovery of a substantial amount of cash at his residence. The development came to light after a fire broke out at his house on March 14, 2025, leading to the unexpected recovery of the money.
Justice Varma, however, has strongly denied any involvement, claiming that neither he nor his family owns the cash. He has alleged that the incident is a conspiracy aimed at tarnishing his reputation. According to his statement, the money was found in an outhouse, not the main building where he resides with his family. He also asserted that no cash was ever stored there by him or his relatives.
On Saturday evening, the Supreme Court made public an inquiry report submitted by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya. The report suggested that the matter required deeper investigation. Taking cognizance of the situation, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has constituted a three-member committee of senior judges to probe the allegations.
The case has sparked discussions on judicial accountability, with legal experts emphasising the need for a fair and transparent investigation.
