Delhi HC Judge gets transferred after fire at residence leads to huge cash recovery
PTC News Desk: The Supreme Court collegium has initiated the process to transfer the Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma to his parent court Allahabad High Court following recovery of large amount of cash from his official residence.
The five-member collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna held an urgent meeting as soon as the incident came to light. Justice Varma's proposed transfer can come into effect after the Centre accepts the collegium's recommendation, which is yet to be sent officially.
The incident came to light after a fire broke out at Justin Verma's official residence while he was not in the city. His family members informed the fire brigade and the police about the matter. After extinguishing the fire, the brigade personnel discovered a huge pile of cash in different rooms of the bungalow.
The incident report mentioned the discovery of unaccounted cash in the bungalow.
As soon as the incident was reported, the Supreme Court called a meeting and unanimously decided to transfer Justice Verma to his parent court Allahabad High Court till 2021.
According to the reports an investigation and impeachment procedure against Justice Verma is also under consideration. As per the Constitution, an in-house procedure was formulated by the Supreme Court in 1999 to probe allegations of corruption, misconduct, or irregularities against any High Court or Supreme Court judge.
