Delhi expects monsoon arrival in 48 hours, rain anticipated today
New Delhi, June 26: The long-awaited southwest monsoon is on its way to reach Delhi within the next 48 hours, as stated by the IMD. This timely arrival, close to the normal onset date of June 27, brings relief to the capital, which has endured scorching heat in recent days.
In the previous year, the monsoon had reached Delhi on June 30.
The weather department has issued an orange alert for rain in Delhi on Sunday, with the likelihood of moderate to heavy showers. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for Saturday evening and night, Monday, and Tuesday, indicating the possibility of light to very light rain in isolated areas.
Weather experts have noted favorable meteorological conditions for the southwest monsoon's further progression over parts of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, eastern Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi over the next two days.
IMD scientist Kuldeep Srivastava stated that isolated areas of Delhi-NCR may experience heavy rainfall, while a larger region can expect a moderate spell. He attributed the conducive conditions for the monsoon's potential arrival in Delhi by Monday to easterly winds and a generally cloudy sky prevailing over a significant portion of western Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR.
Srivastava added, "We anticipate an overcast sky accompanied by rain activity in a large region over the next three to four days. Currently, the monsoon has entered eastern Uttar Pradesh and certain areas of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. It will progress from eastern UP to parts of western UP and eventually reach Delhi-NCR."
On Saturday, Delhi witnessed an overcast sky and a slight drop in maximum temperature. The weather department expects further reduction in the maximum temperature on Sunday and Monday.
On Saturday, the maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung, the city's base station, was 37.2 degree celsius, slightly below the normal of 37.7 degree celsius from the previous day. The minimum temperature was 30.4 degree celsius, two notches below the normal of 27.4 degree celsius from the previous day.
Humidity ranged between 81 per cent and 52 per cent. The maximum temperature on Sunday is projected to hover around 35 degree celsius, but it is likely to drop to 32 degree celsius on Monday. Meanwhile, the air quality remained moderate, with an AQI (Air Quality Index) of 169 compared to 132 a day earlier.
