Dense fog engulfs Delhi; 50 flights and 30 trains affected

PTC News Desk: Delhi, the national capital of India, continues to grapple with harsh coldwave conditions, enveloping the city in thick fog and causing significant disruptions to both air and train travel.

On Tuesday, the coldwave persisted in Delhi, cloaking the city in a dense layer of fog, leading to adverse consequences for transportation services. The reduced visibility had substantial ramifications on air travel, with approximately 30 flights departing from Delhi experiencing delays, and another 17 being canceled, according to reports from airport sources cited by news agency ANI. Additionally, nearly 30 trains arriving in Delhi faced delays on the same day.

Passengers at both the Delhi airport and railway station found themselves in a state of waiting as the pervasive fog disrupted flight and train operations throughout the day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) provided insights into the weather conditions, stating, "Delhi Palam (VIDP) and Safdarjung Airports are reporting 500m visibilities at 0530 hrs IST today, the 16th January."

In its morning bulletin on Monday, the weather department had forecasted that dense to very dense fog would persist until Tuesday in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab. Furthermore, cold to severe cold conditions were expected to prevail across north India until Tuesday.

The morning of January 15 marked the coldest of the winter season, with the minimum temperature plummeting to 3.3°C at Safdarjung, the official weather observatory in the national capital. Another weather monitoring station in Delhi, Lodhi Road, recorded a minimum temperature of 3.1°C. The chill persisted on Sunday as well, with Safdarjung experiencing a minimum temperature of 3.5°C, and Lodhi Road recording 3.4°C. The mercury in Delhi has remained below 4 degrees Celsius since Friday, subjecting residents to biting cold conditions.
