Delhi airport to soon have full-body scanners and CTX machines; read more details

New Delhi, December 15: The Delhi airport is set to introduce full-body scanners and Computed Tomography X-ray (CTX) machines by May 2024, aiming to upgrade security measures and passenger convenience.

Zulfiquar Hasan, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) Director General, confirmed an extension of deadlines for installing these technologies. Airports serving over 10 million passengers annually must install full-body scanners by December 31, while those accommodating over 5 million passengers need CTX machines by the same date.

However, challenges in procurement have led to ongoing discussions between BCAS and the airport authorities. Hasan anticipates implementing both technologies, including full-body scanners and CTX machines, at the Delhi airport by May 2024.

CTX scanners will eliminate the need for passengers to remove electronic devices from hand baggage during security checks. The BCAS plans to roll out full-body scanners gradually, using computer tomography technology to enhance security checks without requiring the removal of electronic items.

Currently, passengers are required to separate electronic devices for screening during security checks. The new scanners promise a more thorough view of items within hand baggage, expediting the security process.

As India's aviation market continues to grow rapidly, this initiative aims to improve both security measures and passenger experiences. From January to November 2023, domestic airlines in India served over 13.82 crore passengers, highlighting the sector's robust expansion and escalating demand.
