Cyclone Biparjoy likely to make landfall in Gujarat, IMD issues yellow alert
Cyclone Biparjoy, which became an extremely severe storm on Sunday, is expected to intensify further and make landfall in Gujarat's Kutch. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a warning for the Gujarat coasts of Saurashtra and Kutch.
The IMD issued a 'yellow' alert for Gujarat owing to Cyclone Biparjoy in its bulletin on Sunday night. “Cyclone Alert for Saurashtra & Kutch Coast: Yellow Message. ESCS BIPARJOY over east-central Arabian Sea, at 1730 IST of 11th June near lat 18.6N & long 67.7E, Likely to cross between Mandvi (Gujarat) & Karachi (Pakistan) by noon of 15th June,” it stated.
In the midst of the cyclone alert, officials at the Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, Gujarat's Kutch, have begun shifting people from low-lying regions to temporary shelters. Om Prakash, Public Relations Officer of Deendayal Port Authority, stated that six ships had left the port and 11 more will be departing on Monday. He also stated that port officials and ship owners have been instructed to keep vigilant.
On Sunday night, rain and strong winds lashed areas of Mumbai and Maharashtra as the intensity of Cyclone Biparjoy increased.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Pakistan has issued a high alert to the authorities involved, as the cyclone is expected to hit Sindh's coastal districts on June 13.
