Covid-19 update: India records 827 cases of sub-variant JN.1 so far

Covid-19 update: India has so far reported a total of 827 cases of Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 from 12 states.

According to official data, 250 cases from Maharashtra, 199 from Karnataka, 155 from Kerala, 49 from Goa, 36 from Gujarat, 30 from Andhra Pradesh, 30 from Rajasthan, 26 from Tamil Nadu and Telangana, 22 from Delhi, three from Odisha, and one from Haryana have been reported.

Even though the number of cases is increasing and the JN.1 subvariant has been detected in the country, officials say there is no immediate cause for concern because the majority of those infected are seeking home-based treatment, indicating mild illness.

The Centre has asked states and union territories to remain vigilant in the face of an increase in Covid cases and the detection of the JN.1 subvariant in the country.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has urged states to ensure effective compliance with the detailed operational guidelines for the revised COVID-19 surveillance strategy.

The WHO has classified JN.1 as a separate "variant of interest" due to its rapid spread, but it poses a "low" global public health risk.
