Covid-19 surge: India reports 761 fresh Covid infections, 12 deaths
Covid-19 surge: As per the data and reports by Union health ministry, India witnessed 761 fresh Covid-19 infections and 12 deaths in last 24 hours.
As per the health data by today, the active Covid-19 cases in the country slightly decreased from 4,423 to 4,334 in last 24 hours.
Kerala has recorded the highest number with 1,249 active cases, followed by Karnataka (1,240), Maharashtra (914), Tamil Nadu (190), and Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh (128 each).
Meanwhile, 12 fatalities has been reported – five from Kerala, four from Karnataka, two from Maharashtra, and one from Uttar Pradesh.

Daily Covid-19 cases are in double digits due to biting cold weather and emergence of new Covid-19 variant. Till now so far, over 4.5 crore people have been infected, resulting in over 5.3 lakh deaths in the country
Following the increase in JN.1 subvariant, Odisha reported two fresh cases of the Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 today.
Notably, JN.1 is a variant of the Omicron subvariant known as BA.2.86 or Pirola. Kerala reported the first case of the JN.1 variant of COVID-19.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently designated JN.1 as a variant of interest, different from its parent lineage BA.2.86. However, the World Health Organisation emphasised that, based on current evidence, the overall risk posed by JN.1 remains low.
