Dense fog disrupts Delhi and North India; flights and trains affected
PTC News Desk: Delhi and its surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) continue to grapple with severe visibility issues as dense fog persists for the third consecutive day. This weather phenomenon has significantly impacted road, rail, and air travel, causing disruptions and delays. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes these conditions to a western disturbance in the Himalayan region.
The national capital experienced near-zero visibility at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) during the night, resulting in delays for flights. In response to the challenging fog conditions, the Delhi airport issued an advisory for passengers, stating, “While landing and takeoffs continue at Delhi Airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.”

The CAT III instrument, an anti-fog landing system, plays a crucial role in enabling planes to land in low-visibility conditions, allowing for landings with a minimum visibility of up to 50 meters. The dense fog has also impacted train services, with several trains departing from or heading towards Delhi experiencing delays. This situation mirrors the events of the previous day when 19 Delhi-bound trains and numerous flights were affected.
In a weather forecast, the IMD predicts light rainfall in the national capital over the next two days (Wednesday and Thursday) due to the western disturbance in the Himalayan region. The forecast includes "dense to very dense fog in the morning and light rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds towards evening or night," as mentioned in the IMD's bulletin.

As of Tuesday, Delhi experienced a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, with the maximum temperature expected to reach up to 19 degrees Celsius. The dense fog isn't limited to Delhi alone, as adjoining regions such as Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are also facing similar weather conditions. The IMD reports "cold day conditions at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh" and mentions the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places in Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
As residents and travelers navigate through these challenging weather conditions, authorities advise staying updated on flight and train information, taking necessary precautions, and being prepared for potential disruptions.
