Constitution Day 2024: Why we celebrate Samvidhan Diwas on Nov 26?
Constitution Day 2024: Every year on November 26, India honours Constitution Day, which commemorates the Constitution's adoption by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. While the Constitution came into force a few months later, on January 6, 1950, when India became a republic, its adoption remains a watershed point in Indian history.
Previously, this day was commemorated as Law Day.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken to social media to wish the citizens. "Happy Constitution Day to all countrymen on the auspicious occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution," the PM posted.
After India gained independence, the Constituent Assembly, founded in 1946, assigned the task of drafting the Constitution to a commission directed by Dr. Ambedkar. The assembly took two years, eleven months, and seventeen days to draft the world's longest Constitution, which has held a diverse country like India together for more than seven decades.
The Preamble to India's Constitution defines the country to be a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic with the aim to secure justice, liberty, and equality for all citizens while also promoting fraternity to safeguard the nation's unity and integrity.
