Gandhi vs Shah on constitution: Congress MPs launch protest against Amit Shah's remarks over constitution debate

PTC News Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi engaged in war of wards during the accustomed parliament proceedings. In a sharp rebuke, opposition MPs including Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi held a protest against Union Home Minister Amit Shah's speech in the Rajya Sabha during the Constitution debate yesterday.  MPs have alleged that Union Home Minister has insulted Dr. BR Ambedkar in his speech yesterday.

Amit Shah's remarks with references to Dr. Ambedkar's legacy and opposition leaders’ frequent references to the principal architect of the Indian Constitution encountered sharp rebuke from Congress.

Amit Shah took a jibe at Congress and said that nowadays it has become fashion to take Ambedkar's name. “There’s a fashion now of saying ‘Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar’. If one takes God’s name this many times, one would get into heaven. Take Ambedkar’s name 100 more times, but I will tell you how you really feel about Ambedkar ji.”

In response to the Shah's remarks, Rahul Gandhi took to his social media and wrote, “Those who believe in Manusmriti will definitely have problems with Ambedkar ji.”

Congress has not been much fond of this ancient Hindu text and often criticised for its patriarchal and casteist prescriptions which distinctly contrasts with Dr. Ambedkar's vision enshrined in the Constitution.

During his address in Rajya Sabha, Amit Shah spoke about Ambedkar’s resignation from the first cabinet, citing his discontent with the treatment of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, disagreements over foreign policy, and Article 370. He highlighted an alleged comment by then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who reportedly remarked that Ambedkar’s exit would not weaken the cabinet.

Shah's contrasting remarks with its own party met with sharp rebuttal by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

“The insult that Home Minister Amit Shah has done to Baba Saheb in the House today has once again proved that BJP/ RSS were against the Tricolour, opposed the Ashoka Chakra, and wanted to implement Manusmriti instead of the Constitution. Babasaheb did not let that happen, that is why there is so much hatred towards him,” Kharge said.
