The protests erupted after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) submitted a chargesheet against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi to a special PMLA court as part of its money laundering investigation into the National herald case.
According to the chargesheet, the ED has accused the Gandhis and other individuals of acquiring the assets of Associated Journals Ltd (AJL), the publisher of the National Herald, at a significantly undervalued price of ₹50 lakh, while the actual market value of the assets is estimated at ₹2,000 crore.
AJL was originally established by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The ED claims that the assets were taken over by Young Indian, a “not-for-profit” organization controlled by Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. Both leaders are currently out on bail in connection with the case.
