CJI DY Chandrachud's tenure to conclude; everything to know about his landmark judgments

PTC News Desk: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud is all set to retire on November 10 and with his tenure concluding, Justice Sanjeev Khanna, senior most Judge in the apex court will succeed him. He will assume the office as the new Chief Justice of India on November 11. With a ceremonial farewell at the Supreme Court, he retired from judicial services on Friday. 

While highlighting his initial days, outgoing CJI shed light on his initial days and said that those parts of the judiciary come to the court as “pilgrims".


CJI is known for his compassionate approach and vast interpretation of constitutional rights. He is known for delivering some of the major landmark judgments on controversial issues with steadfast commitment to justice.  His last working day was marked by significant ruling where Supreme Court overruled its 1967 verdict stating that Aligarh Muslim University is entitled to minority status. 

A look at DY Chandrachud's landmark judgments

1.Electoral Bonds Case: February 2024

A five-judge constitution bench led by CJI Chandrachud unanimously struck down Union Government's electoral bond scheme for political funding.

2.Ayodhya Title Dispute: November 2019

Considering highly contentious nature of the Ayodhya-Babri Masjid conflict, the verdict peacefully resolved the row paving way for construction of Ram Mandir.

3.Delhi Govt Vs LG: May 2023

A five-judge constitution bench led by Chief Justice ruled legislature has control over bureaucrats in the administration of services, except in areas outside the legislative powers of the National Capital Territory (NCT). There are three areas outside the control of the Delhi government – public order, police and land.

4. Sabrimala Case: September 2018

In one of the most controversial case owing to its religious nature, the Supreme Court lifted ban on women from entering Sabrimala temple

5. Decriminalisation of Adultery: September 2018

A five-judge constitution bench in a contrasting yet concurring opinion decriminalised adultery and struck it off the Indian Penal Code
