PTC News Desk: The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has nominated Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the Supreme Court's second-most senior justice, as his successor.

As is customary, the retiring Chief Justice of India writes a letter to the Union Law Ministry recommending the second-most senior judge as successor, whose recommendation has to be confirmed by the Union government.

DY Chandrachud became Chief Justice of India on November 9, 2022, and his tenure will end on November 10. Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65.

Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?

In 1983, he enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi and practised in the district courts of the Tis Hazari complex. He later practised in the Delhi High Court and tribunals.

Justice Khanna worked as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department before becoming the Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi in 2004.

He also served as an Additional Public Prosecutor and amicus curie in criminal cases in the Delhi High Court, eventually becoming an additional judge in 2005 and a permanent judge in 2006.

Justice Khanna has held posts as Chairman/Judge-in-Charge of the Delhi Judicial Academy, the Delhi International Arbitration Centre, and the District Court Mediation Centres.

On January 18, 2019, he was promoted to the position of Supreme Court Judge, even before becoming Chief Justice of any High Court.

He is currently the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority and a member of the Governing Counsel of the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal.

In a case involving a journalist and his remarks on a TV show, a bench headed by him ruled that Article 19(1)(a) cannot be utilised to undermine the basic right provided by Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

A bench he served on also cleared the controversial Central Vista Project. He also served on Constitutional benches that upheld the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution and overturned the electoral bonds scheme.
