PTC Web Desk: The alarming rise in air pollution levels in Chandigarh has prompted the health department to issue an urgent health advisory for residents. The city, now ranked as the second most polluted in India, has been in the 'red zone' for air quality for the past week, causing serious public health concerns.

Meanwhile, amid the crisis, Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari has called on Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria to consider closing schools until the situation improves. Tewari raised this demand through a post on his social media account, X (formerly Twitter).

Notably, Chandigarh’s deteriorating air quality is a major cause for concern, placing the health of its residents at risk.  The following guidelines have been issued by the authorities to mitigate health crisis amid rising pollution levels.

Outdoor Activities Restricted: Residents have been strongly advised against jogging or engaging in physical exercises during the morning and evening hours when pollution levels are highest.

Mask Mandate: The health department has recommended wearing masks whenever stepping outside to minimise exposure to polluted air.

Window Safety Measures: Citizens are advised to keep windows and doors closed before noon and after 4 pm to reduce indoor air contamination.

Avoid Fuel Burning: The public has been urged to avoid burning wood, coal, kerosene, and other fuels that contribute to air pollution.

Special Precautions for Vulnerable Groups: Individuals with pre-existing lung or heart conditions have been advised to take extra precautions to protect their health.

Smoking Discouraged: The authorities have recommended avoiding smoking, including cigarettes and bidis, due to its harmful impact on health and contribution to indoor pollution.

Indoor Air Quality Measures: Residents have been cautioned against using room fresheners, mosquito coils, and incense sticks, which can exacerbate indoor air quality issues.

Eye Care Guidance: The advisory recommends rinsing eyes with clean water frequently and consulting a doctor in case of irritation or discomfort.

In a bid to curb pollution, the administration recently imposed a ban on the use of diesel generator sets.
