Centre issues notice to Ola, Uber over alleged price variation on different devices
PTC News Desk: The Ministry of Consumer Affairs on Thursday issued a notice to Ola and Uber and sought justification of reports of alleged differential pricing based on the type of mobile device used to book rides.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has taken notice of the reports surfacing that both the companies have charged customers differently for the same service based on whether they are using an iPhone or Android device.
The CCPA has sought explanation from the companies about their pricing methods while addressing discrimination. The ministry has sought a detailed response over the report to ensure transparency and fairness.
The move comes days after a Delhi-based entrepreneur shared his findings on differential pricing by the two ride-hailing apps in a series of posts on X after comparing fares across different devices and battery levels.
Uber while denying the allegations has attributed any fare differences to variations in pick-up points, estimated time of arrival (ETA), and drop-off points, stating that it does not personalise trip pricing based on the rider's mobile phone manufacturer.
