Centre directs states, UTs to prohibit sale and breeding of 23 dog breeds | Check List
New Delhi, March 14: Amid escalating incidents of pet dog attacks, the Central Government has instructed states to prohibit the sale and breeding of 23 breeds of aggressive dogs, including Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler, and Mastiffs. The directive, conveyed to states and Union Territories, restricts people from keeping these 23 breeds as pets. Additionally, owners of these breeds are mandated to sterilise their dogs to prevent further breeding.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying said it had received petitions from citizens, citizen forums, and animal welfare organisations seeking a ban on certain dog breeds as pets and for other purposes.
An expert panel identified these 23 breeds, encompassing mixed and crossbreeds, as ferocious and posing a danger to human lives. Notable breeds listed for the ban include Pitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, and American Bulldog, among others.
Furthermore, breeds such as Boerboel Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog, Caucasian Shepherd Dog, South Russian Shepherd Dog, Tornjak, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa, and Akita are also targeted for prohibition.
"The above dog breeds, including crossbreeds, shall be prohibited for import, breeding, selling as pet dogs, and other purposes," stated the letter, citing the recommendations of the expert panel.
