PTC News Desk: In a significant move towards implementing simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, the Union Cabinet approved the "One Nation, One Election" proposal on Wednesday. Sources indicate that a bill to formalise this change is expected to be introduced during the upcoming winter session of Parliament.

The Cabinet's decision follows the presentation of a comprehensive report by the high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind. This committee was established by the Modi 2.0 government to assess the feasibility and implications of conducting elections concurrently. The committee submitted its findings to the President in March of this year.

In recent weeks, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has significantly ramped up its advocacy for simultaneous elections. This issue was highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech, where he emphasised that frequent elections are impeding the country’s progress.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also strongly supported the initiative, asserting that the implementation of One Nation, One Election would occur within the current term of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
