Bravery amid terror: Kashmiri locals emerge as heroes in Pahalgam attack
PTC Web Desk: In the face of terror, humanity shone brighter than fear in the scenic town of Pahalgam, Kashmir, as local residents risked their lives to protect tourists caught in a tragic attack. What was meant to spread fear only reinforced the spirit of unity and compassion in the Valley.
A pony handler who became a martyr
Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a 28-year-old pony handler and the sole breadwinner for his family, paid the ultimate price to protect those in his care. On that fateful day, Adil confronted the attackers head-on, trying to disarm one of them in a desperate attempt to save tourists. His bravery cost him his life, but not before he became a symbol of selfless courage. His funeral, attended by locals and even the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, became a powerful statement of solidarity.
A guide who shielded a family with his own body
Nazakat Ahmed Shah, a young guide in his late twenties, was hailed by survivors for his heroic actions. Arvind Agarwal, a tourist from Chhattisgarh and BJP leader, recounted how Nazakat shielded him, his wife, and their young daughter during the gunfire. Despite witnessing his own cousin fall to the bullets, Nazakat didn’t hesitate to put others first. His quick thinking and willingness to protect even the children by hugging them close ensured the family’s survival.
Drivers who became lifesavers
For Kochi-based Arathi R Menon, who lost her father N Ramachandran in the violence, the kindness of locals brought some light to a dark day. She spoke of two drivers, Musafir and Sameer, who treated her family like their own. From arranging transport to helping them flee the area safely, these men acted as guardian angels when chaos unfolded around them.
The unnamed yet unforgettable
Beyond the known names were countless others—guides, ponywallahs, shopkeepers—who shielded tourists behind trees, fences, and even horses. Many ran toward danger to guide terrified visitors to safer ground. Though their names may be unknown, their humanity spoke louder than any headline.
The spirit of Kashmiriyat lives on
The attack may have aimed to instill fear and division, but it only strengthened the bonds of humanity and compassion in Kashmir. The courage and hospitality displayed by the people of Pahalgam reaffirm the values of Kashmiriyat—a timeless blend of love, respect, and communal harmony.
