Bihar lightning and hailstorm tragedy: 61 killed, orange alert issued for more rain
Bihar weather update: At least 61 persons have lost their lives in Bihar due to intense thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and hailstorms that hit the state on Thursday, officials confirmed. The state witnessed widespread destruction as heavy rains and strong winds swept across several districts.
According to the Bihar Disaster Management Department, out of the total deaths, 39 were caused by hailstorms and rain-related incidents, while 22 persons were killed due to lightning strikes. The department released this update on Friday.
Nalanda district reported the highest number of casualties, with 23 persons losing their lives. This was followed by Bhojpur with six deaths. Four deaths each were reported from Siwan, Gaya, Patna, and Sheikhpura districts. Jamui recorded three deaths, and Jehanabad reported two. Other districts, including Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Arwal, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Saharsa, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Nawada, and Bhagalpur, each reported one fatality.
In addition to the loss of lives, several homes suffered severe damage due to the lightning and storms. The state government is assessing the extent of destruction.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the tragic loss of lives and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the families of each deceased.
The Bihar Economic Survey 2024-25, presented in the state Assembly earlier this year, had already highlighted the risk of lightning-related fatalities. In 2023 alone, Bihar recorded 275 deaths due to lightning and thunderstorms. Rohtas had the highest toll with 25 deaths, followed by Gaya (21), Aurangabad (19), Jamui (17), and Madhepura and Bhagalpur (16 each).
Weather forecast and alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Bihar, warning of more heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. On Thursday, gusty winds at 40-50 kmph, lightning, and storms were predicted in Kishanganj, Araria, and Purnea.
The IMD has also forecast similar weather for Saturday, April 12, especially in parts of Katihar, Supaul, and the southeastern region of the state.
From Sunday through Monday, thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are likely to affect eastern Bihar. Between April 14 and 15, central, eastern, south-central, north-central, and south-western Bihar could also experience isolated storm activity. The authorities have urged residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open fields, and follow weather updates closely to remain safe.
