In ‘biggest ever’ haul, Indian Coast Guard seizes 5 ton drugs from fishing boat in Andaman waters
PTC News Desk: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) seized what it described as its biggest-ever drug consignment from a fishing boat in Andaman waters. According to defence sources, the seized consignment contained around five tonnes of narcotics.
"Indian Coast Guard has apprehended a huge consignment of around five tonnes of drugs from a fishing boat in the Andaman waters. This is likely to be the biggest ever drug haul by the Indian Coast Guard ever. More details awaited," defence officials informed.
This haul is the latest in a string of similar seizures carried out by anti-narcotics officials as part of their crackdown on drug smuggling and cartel activity.
In a massive drug seizure earlier this month, anti-narcotics officials recovered around 700 kilogrammes of Methamphetamine, also known as meth, and arrested eight Iranian citizens from the Gujarat coast.
The operation, codenamed 'Sagar Manthan - 4', was started based on intelligence inputs, according to a statement from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), with the Navy identifying and interdicting a vessel using its marine patrol assets.
The operation was carried out in collaboration with the NCB, Navy, and Gujarat Police Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS).
Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to the drug bust, saying the operation was a "stellar example of the government's commitment to the vision and the seamless coordination among our agencies in achieving the same."
This year, anti-narcotics officials seized a staggering 3,500 kgs of drugs trafficking through the sea route, arresting 11 Iranians and 14 Pakistani people in three separate incidents.
