Bhopal Gas Tragedy: The catastrophe that nation have mourned for 39 years and still continue to haunt survivors

39 years of Bhopal Gas Tragedy: The Bhopal gas tragedy, touted as the world's worst industrial disaster that claimed the lives of several thousand people after deadly gas leaked from the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant on the intervening night of December 2 and 3, 1984.

The tragedy unfolded in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, when the highly dangerous and toxic gas, methyl isocyanate (MIC), escaped from the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) and resulted in several deaths and injured almost 558,125 persons besides loss of livestock.

Several survivors continue to suffer from various health issues due to exposure to toxic gases during the tragedy. Respiratory problems, neurological disorders, birth defects, and other chronic health conditions are prevalent among the affected population today also. 

Many survivors faced economic hardships due to the loss of family members, health issues, and the overall impact on the local economy. The psychological trauma from the disaster and its aftermath has had a lasting impact on the mental well-being of the survivors.

THE RAILWAY MEN: THE UNTOLD STORY OF BHOPAL 1984

The Railway Men: The Untold Story of Bhopal 1984 is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language historical drama streaming television miniseries about railway workers who saved many lives during a 1984 toxic gas leak at the chemical company Union Carbide India Limited's plant in Bhopal. The show features R Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyenndu and Babil Khan.

'The Railway Men' crafts a fascinating narrative inspired by genuine stories and set against the terrible backdrop of the Bhopal Gas Leak incident in 1984.

It's a compelling examination of the incredible efforts made by Indian Railways employees who went beyond the call of duty to save lives during the city's darkest hours.

The 4-episode series 'The Railway Men', created under the banner of YRF Entertainment, was released on Netflix on November 18. 

ABOUT BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY

In the late hours of December 2-3, 1984, methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide factory owned by the Union Carbide Corporation.

The gas disaster is considered the world's worst industrial tragedy. Over 3,000 people died within days of the gas leak and more in the later years with many families suffering health consequences. Survivors and their families have said they have struggled with health problems such as cancer and respiratory, immune and neurological disorders.
