Bharat Bandh 2024: What to expect, what’s closed on August 21, and everything you need to know
Bharat Bandh 2024: The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has called for a Bharat Bandh on August 21, in protest against a recent Supreme Court ruling concerning SC/ST reservations. This nationwide strike has received backing from SC/ST groups across Rajasthan and is expected to impact various regions.
The Bharat Bandh was organised in response to the Supreme Court's recent ruling which permits states to create sub-categories within SC and ST groups.
The ruling aims to prioritise reservations for those who are deemed to need them the most. Critics argue that this decision undermines the existing reservation system and disadvantages those already benefiting from it. The main objective of the bandh is to challenge this ruling and push for its reversal.

In preparation for the bandh, authorities have implemented extensive security measures. The Director General of Police (DGP) UR Sahoo has instructed police forces to increase deployment across all districts.
District Superintendents of Police (SPs) have been directed to maintain law and order throughout the event. The DGP also mentioned that officials will be meeting with bandh organisers and market associations to facilitate better cooperation and mitigate potential disruptions.
A meeting via video conferencing included all divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and senior police officers to strategise for the bandh. Western Uttar Pradesh, noted for its sensitivity, has been placed on high alert, with additional measures in place to ensure public safety during the protests.

Typically, on Bharat Bandh days, public transportation and private offices may remain closed. However, emergency services such as ambulances are expected to operate normally. Residents should prepare for potential disruptions and stay informed through local news and official announcements.
This Bharat Bandh aims to draw attention to the perceived injustice of the Supreme Court's decision and mobilize support from various social and political organisations.
