Bengaluru witnesses 'Zero Shadow Day,' know more about this rare phenomenon

Zero Shadow Day: Bengaluru on Tuesday witnessed a rare celestial phenomenon called ‘Zero Shadow Day' with all vertical objects in the city going shadow-less for a short period of time. The event occurred at 12:17 pm.

The unique phenomenon only occurs in selected places every few years. On Tuesday, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bengaluru's Koramangala celebrated the occasion by hosting events on its campus.

“Come celebrate Zero Shadow Day #ZSD at our Koramangala campus on 25 Apr from 10 AM-1 PM. Sun will be directly overhead at 12:17," the IIA tweeted.

As Bengalurians experienced the rare celestial phenomenon, many people took to social media to share visuals of objects with disappeared shadows.

“All vertical objects in the city were shadowless at 12:17 pm! It occurs twice a year when the sun is exactly overhead," a Twitter user said.

"Today was apparently the #zeroshadowday phenomenon in Bengaluru at 12:17 pm. Vertically placed objects hardly show any drop shadow because of angle at which the sun rays fall. Was testing it on my watch," another user tweeted.

Zero Shadow Day

This event occurs twice a year and causes a "glitch" because all vertical objects stop casting shadows while the celestial phenomenon lasts. Because vertical objects do not have shadows during Zero Shadow Day, the scene appears strange to the eyes.

This rare phenomenon is most common near the equator, specifically between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
