Bengaluru water crisis deepens as all borewells go dry; Dy CM flags concerns

Bengaluru water crisis: In a urgent response to the severe water crisis in Bengaluru, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the state was mobilising efforts to address the situation promptly. He expressed concern over the depletion of over 3,000 borewells in the city, including the one at his residence.

"We are actively working to identify every available water source. All borewells, including the one at my house, have run dry. This is a matter of utmost seriousness, and I've held meetings with officials to take over water tanks and pinpoint viable water points. Despite trying 217 tunnels, more than 3,000 borewells in Bangalore have dried up. We are closely monitoring the water supply from the Cauvery," the Deputy Chief Minister stated.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also attributed the water crisis to the lack of support from the Central Government regarding the Mekedatu project. He urged the Central Government to intervene and resolve the issue.

Highlighting the impact on the public, Shivakumar acknowledged the soaring costs of water tankers in the city, with prices increasing from ₹500 to ₹2,000 for a 5,000-litre tanker. He assured that the government is committed to providing water at reasonable rates to the citizens.

The Deputy Chief Minister had previously warned water tanker owners that their vehicles would be seized if they failed to register with the authorities by the March 7 deadline. Out of 3,500 water tankers in Bengaluru, only 219 had registered by the given date.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah added that 223 out of the state's 236 talukas are grappling with drought, with 219 severely affected by the water crisis. The situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the growing water crisis in the region.
