Bengal Horror: Health services disrupted in Bengal as doctors continue strike over medic's assault-murder

PTC News Desk: Health care services at state-run hospitals in West Bengal were severely impacted on Friday as junior doctors maintained their strike for the 15th consecutive day. The protest is in response to the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH).

Despite the Supreme Court's appeal for the doctors to resume work, the strike persists. The court had urged the protesting doctors to return to their duties and assured that no coercive action would be taken against them. The Supreme Court emphasized that both judges and doctors should not engage in strikes, as their roles are crucial to matters of life and liberty.

An agitating doctor from RGKMCH told PTI, "Our protest will continue until we see the culprits punished. We are not here for anything else. We cannot call off the demonstration suddenly unless our demand is fulfilled."

The ongoing strike has significantly affected the flow of patients to government hospitals. A senior doctor at SSKM Hospital noted, "In recent days, the number of patients has decreased, even though senior doctors are managing outpatient departments (OPDs) and emergency units. This decline is due to public awareness of the junior doctors' agitation."

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched an investigation into the alleged rape and murder of the female doctor at the state-run hospital. The continuing protest underscores the doctors' demand for justice and accountability in this tragic case.
