Bangalore becomes first Indian city to receive BIS certification for piped water supply
PTC Web Desk: Bangalore has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian city to receive the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for its piped water supply. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) announced that this certification underscores the city’s commitment to efficiency, safety, and sustainability in water supply management.
The BIS evaluation process rigorously assessed multiple aspects of water supply, including intake, treatment, distribution, and quality assurance, all of which met the organisation’s stringent standards.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who oversees Bangalore Urban Development, hailed the achievement as a significant step toward ensuring clean and safe drinking water for residents. "Providing high-quality drinking water has always been a priority for our government. This BIS certification affirms our dedication to sustainable urban development and efficient water management," he stated.
BWSSB Chairman V Ram Prasath Manohar emphasised that the certification covers the entire water supply chain—from sourcing and purification to distribution and monitoring. "This recognition reinforces our commitment to excellence in every stage of water management, including intake, treatment, storage, pumping, distribution, and quality assurance," he said.
The certification also validates the efficiency of consumer-related services such as metering and billing, ensuring that Bangalore’s residents receive high-quality and well-regulated water supply.
With this achievement, Bangalore sets a new benchmark for urban water management in India, paving the way for other cities to follow suit in adopting globally recognised standards.
