Badlapur assault case: Advocate says accused Akshay Shinde turned fired at police because...

PTC News Desk: Advocate Ujjwal Nikam, Maharashtra's special public prosecutor in the Badlapur sexual assault case, stated that the accused Akshay Shinde became violent and fired at police after realising he could not escape the law.

The lawyer stated that the police had enough proof against Akshay Shinde, and that two charge sheets had been filed against him so far in the case. Ujjwal Nikam said that the victims clearly identified the accused.

"The police had enough evidence that if the case had gone to court, he would have received the death penalty. When the accused realises that he has no chance of escaping, he could become violent. So, Akshay Shinde could be psychologically depressed, which is why he attacked police or tried to kill himself," Ujjwal Nikam stated.

He defended police action against the accused, claiming that they fired in retaliation to 'save' their lives, resulting in injuries to two of their officers. "The police had to do a firing in retaliation and two policemen also got injured," according to him.

What happened?

Akshay Shinde, accused of sexually assaulting two girls at a school in Maharashtra's Badlapur was shot dead by police after he snatched the revolver of one of the officers and fired at them.

Shinde's ex-wife filed a complaint of unnatural sex against him, and the Thane Crime Branch was looking into it. In connection with this inquiry, an order regarding Shinde's warrant was obtained from the court on Sunday.

On Monday, the Thane Crime Branch team was taking him from Taloja jail to Badlapur, but at Mumbra bypass, he took an officer's revolver and fired three bullets following which a cop fired at him. Shinde was hospitalised at Kalwa Hospital in Thane. Shinde later succumbed to the injuries.
