Assam: One dead, 8 labourers trapped in mine; rescue operation intensified after water reached alarming level
PTC News Desk: Authorities have recovered one dead body from the mine while eight others are still trapped in a mine in Assam's Dima Hasao district since Monday evening after a gush of water flooded the site. The water level has reached to an alarming level of nearly 100 feet and deep divers of the Indian Navy have been deployed to assist authorities in the rescue operation.
The Navy divers have flown from Visakhapatnam to assist a 30-member team of the National Disaster Response Force and another team of the State Disaster Response Force.
Taking to X handle, CM Sarma wrote, "Navy deep divers have been requisitioned to assist in the rescue operation. The water level inside the mine has risen to nearly 100 feet, according to the assessment by the stationed team. The divers are flying in from Visakhapatnam and are expected to arrive soon."
The chief minister also said that police has nabbed one person in connection with the case.
In the backdrop of rescue operation, two diving attempts were made into the mine by task force, comprising divers and engineers from the Indian Army and Assam Rifles to rescue the miners.
Despite continuous efforts, none of the trapped workers have been rescued so far.
The trapped labourers have been identified as Ganga Bahadur Shreth, Hussain Ali, Jakir Hussain, Sarpa Barman, Mustafa Seikh, Khushi Mohan Rai, Sanjit Sarkar, Lijan Magar, and Sarat Goyary.
