Amethi Murders: The horrifying shooting of a Dalit schoolteacher, his wife, and children in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi was the result of an "illicit relationship gone sour," police claimed on Friday.

According to the police, the accused, Chandan Verma, had an affair with the teacher's wife for 18 months, with whom he was having problems.

Sunil, a 35-year-old schoolteacher, his wife Poonam (32), their daughter Drishti (6), and their one-year-old daughter were all shot dead by a group of men, including the main accused Chandan Verma. The attackers barged into their home on Thursday and opened fire on the victims before fleeing the scene. All four family members were declared dead at the hospital.

The investigation revealed that Poonam filed a FIR against Verma in Rae Bareli under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and for eve-teasing. She stated that "if anything happens to her or her family," Verma must be held accountable.

On Saturday, Chandan Verma was injured in a police shootout after trying to flee by taking an official's pistol. Verma, who was arrested on Friday, was shot in the leg when he attempted to flee while being brought for treatment during interrogation, officials said.

According to police, “Verma confessed to killing the family."

"He said that he had been having an affair with Poonam for the last 18 months. However, some disturbance occurred in the relationship, which caused him stress…It appears that he reached the house of the victim and got enraged due to some reason, after which he began shooting the family members, killing all of them,” the police said.
