Amarnath Yatra 2023: The Amarnath Yatra, known as one of the most difficult journeys in Hindu belief, commences on July 1. The Amarnath cave, located in Jammu and Kashmir, is a significant pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva. Despite the challenges, millions of devotees undertake this 48-day pilgrimage every year.
The cave, situated at an altitude of 3888 meters, remains covered in snow throughout the year and opens temporarily in summer as the snow melts. The cave holds immense religious significance as it is believed that Lord Shiva revealed the secret of life to his wife, Parvati, in this very place.
The Amarnath Shivling, a natural formation made of snow, holds a fascinating story. It is said that the continuous dripping of water in the cave contributes to the formation of the Shivling. Each year, a 10-foot-high Shivling made of natural snow is created, and its size varies with the waxing and waning of the moon. Devotees flock to witness this miraculous sight between Asht Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.

According to legend, Bhrigu Muni was the first person to discover the Amarnath cave. It is believed that he rescued the cave from being submerged in water, making it accessible for pilgrimage. The cave is also associated with the story of two pigeons, symbolizing Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, who visited the cave to discuss the secret of immortality.
To embark on the Amarnath Yatra, registration is mandatory. The online registration process involves visiting the official website, filling out the registration form, and making the payment within 24 hours. A travel permit will be issued upon confirmation. Offline registration can be done by paying the registration fee at designated banks. Group registration is also possible by submitting necessary documents to the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board via post.
Certain individuals are advised against undertaking the journey, including pregnant women beyond 6 weeks, children under 13 years, elderly individuals over 75 years, and those with serious illnesses.
