Akola temple incident: Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde announces Rs 4 lakh compensation for families victims

Mumbai, April 10: On Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that the families of the victims in the tragic Akola Babuji Maharaj temple incident will receive Rs 4 lakh each from the Chief Minister's fund. 

According to reports, seven people were killed and 23 injured when a tree collapsed on a tin shed that the devotees were standing underneath during a heavy wind and rainstorm. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the state government would cover the full cost of those hurt in the incident. 


Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis earlier in the day said that the deceased's family will be given financial assistance from the Chief Minister's fund. Fadnavis further said that the state government will bear the full cost of those injured in the incident.

"The incident that happened in Akola's Paras is serious and unfortunate. The government will provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased and the injured will be provided medical treatment free of cost. I have ordered an investigation into the incident," said Fadnavis.

"We have given the orders to assess the damage to crops caused due to unseasonal rains in the state. We have received preliminary information about the extent of the damage," he added.

Collector of Akola Nima Arora reported that nearly 40 people were present under the shed when the old tree fell, out of which 36 were taken to the hospital and four were pronounced dead. The death toll then rose to seven with one person critically injured. The devotees had gathered for a religious ceremony. 

Fadnavis also expressed his condolences to the families of those lost in the incident and said that an investigation will be conducted into the matter. Additionally, he mentioned that the government is assessing the damages caused by the unseasonal rains in the state. The Collector and the Superintendent of Police were immediately dispatched to the scene to ensure that the injured were receiving proper medical attention.
