Air Pollution: Delhi choked, Punjab gasps for fresh air

PTC News Desk: Punjab has been witnessing worsening air quality with deteriorating AQI levels in several areas while Mandi Gobindgarsh who is known as Asia's iron and steel town has been labelled as the most polluted city.

The air quality in Chandigarh remained in 'very poor' category with AQI of 372 meanwhile the air quality in Delhi the air quality in Delhi was recorded in 'severe category' surpassing 400 mark.

For the sixth consecutive day today, the average AQI remained in the ‘very poor’ category in the Chandigarh and it is the longest spell since 2020.

While the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) classifies current air quality as 'very poor' based on 24-hour averages, this does not reflect the severity experienced by city residents in real-time. The average numbers remain less frightening, owing to the dramatically improved air quality on Tuesday. However, morning commuters and those who are exposed to outside air on Wednesday face immediate risks to their health due to extremely high levels of pollution.

Experts warn that the disparity between real-time data and 24-hour averages requires citizens to take proactive measures to safeguard themselves. Residents are advised to wear masks, use air purifiers, and minimise their outdoor activities due to the hazardous circumstances.
