Air India safety violations: Airlines fined Rs 1.10 cr by DGCA

Air India safety violations: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a substantial fine of Rs 1.10 crore on Air India for safety violations identified on specific long-range critical routes. The airline's non-compliance with safety standards was highlighted amidst a series of incidents related to flight irregularities.

This penalty follows a recent Rs 1.20 crore fine imposed on IndiGo for a separate incident involving passengers disembarking onto the tarmac and consuming food, which drew strong criticism from Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

The DGCA initiated an investigation into the safety violations after receiving a complaint from a former Air India pilot, who served as a B777 commander. The probe revealed prima facie evidence of the airline's failure to comply with safety standards. In response, a show-cause notice was issued to the Accountable Manager of Air India Limited, and the airline's adherence to statutory provisions and performance limits specified by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) was thoroughly examined.

Additionally, adverse weather conditions, particularly fog, recently led to a significant number of flight delays and cancellations, resulting in chaos at several airports. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia acknowledged the challenges posed by such natural phenomena, emphasising that global civil aviation systems face similar issues during severe weather conditions. He highlighted the impact of disruptions at base stations, leading to a domino effect of delays and cancellations across the aviation network. Minister Scindia reiterated the ministry's unwavering commitment to prioritising safety as the primary focus within the aviation sector.
