17 cuts to be made in L2 Empuraan after row over Gujarat riots depiction
PTC News Desk: The Malayalam movie L2: Empuraan, which premiered in theatres on Thursday, is set to undergo 17 cuts following controversy over its references to the 2002 Gujarat riots, the production team has confirmed. The revised version will be released in theatres next week.
Scenes depicting violence against women and riot-related visuals will be removed, the antagonist’s name, Baba Bajrangi, will be changed, and certain dialogues will be muted. Producer Gokulam Gopalan previously stated that although the film had received censor clearance, the cuts were being made to avoid offending any community. Director and actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran has reportedly agreed to the modifications.
"If any scenes or dialogues shown in the movie Empuraan hurt anyone, I have told director Prithviraj to make changes," the producer said.
"Some words have been muted for the time being. There have been protests for certain things shown in the movie and I have asked the director, if he can make any changes. He should. The film was censored, there were no issues then. We have no connection with any political party, I see politics as a service," the producer continued.
Meanwhile, The BJP's state secretary, S Suresh, said, "Empuraan film is not a political issue. The Kerala BJP won’t interfere in it. Movie lovers have the liberty to watch the movie and support or criticise it."
