14-year-old fakes bomb threat to skip school in South Delhi
New Delhi, August 3: A bomb threat email received by Summer Fields School in Greater Kailash, South Delhi, turned out to be a hoax orchestrated by a 14-year-old student aiming to skip school, the police said on Saturday.
The email, which threatened to blow up the school, was sent on Friday, prompting an immediate evacuation of the school premises. "We received the email late at night, which was checked early in the morning. Following the standard operating procedure, we evacuated the students within 10 minutes of reading the email," stated Shalini Agarwal, Principal of Summer Fields School.
The Delhi Police have identified the 14-year-old student responsible for the hoax and are currently questioning them. "The student didn't want to attend school and thus sent the bomb threat email," said the police. The email also mentioned two other schools in an attempt to make the threat appear genuine. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
This incident follows a similar case on May 2, when 131 schools in Delhi received threatening emails. The emails contained the Arabic word 'Swaraiim', associated with Islamist propaganda by the Islamic State since 2014. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) later confirmed that those threats also appeared to be hoaxes, assuring the public that there was no need for panic and that necessary protocols were being followed by Delhi Police and security agencies.
