Myanmar: Seven children among 13 killed as Army helicopters target school
Naypyidaw (Myanmar), September 20: At least 13 people including seven children were killed after army helicopters fired at a school in Myanmar, according to media reports. At least 17 people were injured in the incident. Citing the military, TRT World reported that the building was being used by rebels. According to TRT World, the incident occurred on Friday in the village of Let Yet Kone in the central Sagaing region. As per reports, army helicopters opened fire on the school, which is housed in a Buddhist monastery in the area. Some children were killed on the spot by the shooting, while others died after troops entered the village, TRT World reported. Following a coup on February 1, 2020, the Myanmar military junta assumed control of the country. Myanmar's government has launched a widespread crackdown on anyone who oppose military rule. Human Rights Watch claimed that the junta's systematic and widespread atrocities, including mass killings, torture, arbitrary arrests, and indiscriminate attacks on civilians, amounted to crimes against humanity and war crimes. According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, security forces have killed at least 1,600 people and jailed over 12,000 since the February coup.
