MHA seeks report from Rajasthan over communal tension in Jodhpur
New Delhi, May 4: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought a detailed report from the Rajasthan government over communal tension in the state's Jodhpur region, sources informed on Wednesday. According to the sources, the Ministry is also "watching the situation closely" and receiving inputs from the state's administrative and police authorities. On Tuesday, hours before Eid, tensions escalated in Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's hometown of Jodhpur, prompting officials to suspend mobile internet services and impose a curfew in 10 police stations areas of the city. There was a ruckus over the installation of religious flags atop the Jalori gate circle in Jodhpur, which ended in stone-pelting and the injury of five police officers. The state CM has urged people to maintain peace and harmony. Following the incident, the Jodhpur Police Department issued orders to enforce a curfew till midnight on May 4 and to suspend mobile internet services to prevent misinformation from spreading. Near the Jalori gate area, shops, vehicles, and houses were pelted with stones. Minority community members were putting up Eid flags, including one on a roundabout next to the statue of freedom fighter Balmukund Bissa. Members of the other community said that a saffron flag, which they had placed there ahead of Parshuram Jayanti, had gone missing, leading to a clash. Officials reported the situation escalated into stone-pelting and clashes. The police rushed to the scene to control the situation, which resulted in the injuries of five policemen, according to the police. To disperse the mob, authorities had to use tear gas shells. Officials reported that mobile internet services in the area had been suspended to prevent the spread of rumours.
