Manipur landslide: Death toll rises to 34, search operation continues
Manipur, June 3: The death toll in the massive landslide at a Territorial Army Camp in Manipur's Noney district has raised to 34, the officials informed on Saturday.
Among the dead are 23 jawans. The death toll mounted as rescue teams recovered 13 more bodies from the debris on the third day of the search operation.
According to officials, 13 Territorial Army members and five civilians have been rescued so far, while 28 others remain missing.
The landslide also destroyed 107 Territorial Army camps of the Indian army, which were stationed in the area to safeguard the railway construction work.
“So far we’ve recovered 34 bodies, including today’s 13 bodies,” said official monitoring the situation. “Out of the day’s 13 new recoveries, eight are army men,” the official added.

The massive landslide occurred near the railway construction camp in the Marangching part 5 area, about 75 kilometres west of the state capital, on the night of June 29 and 30.
Meanwhile, a fresh landslide hit the Marangching area, where search operations are continuing for the third day, on Saturday morning. However, no loss of life or property was reported during the incident, disaster management officials said.
In light of the incident, the deputy commissioner of Noney district issued an advisory urging residents in villages downstream to exercise caution since the flow in local rivers is expected to climb due to continuous rains and the fresh landslide.
