National Flag Day 2024: India's National Flag Day celebrates the Constituent Assembly's adoption of the Indian national flag on July 22, 1947, just days before the country gained independence from the British. It was a watershed moment in our history, with the adoption of the tricolour marking the nation's move to independence from British rule.
This day commemorates the symbol of India's unity, integrity, and sovereignty, according to the government website Know India.
National Flag Day | History
"Tiranga" - the Indian national flag - has three horizontal stripes of equal width. The top stripe is saffron (kesaria), symbolising courage and sacrifice. The middle stripe is white, symbolising peace and truth, with a navy blue Ashoka Chakra (wheel) in the centre, representing the eternal wheel of law. The bottom stripe is green, representing growth and auspiciousness. The flag's proportions are 2:3, and the Ashoka Chakra contains 24 spokes, representing continuous growth.
The design for India's flag, adopted just before the country attained independence, replaced the old version.
The Ashoka Chakra replaced the spinning wheel or 'Charkha' on the flag.
Badr-ud-Din Tyabji proposed this change, which was supported by Mahatma Gandhi.
Amendments to India's Flag Code were made in 2002, expanding citizens' rights in relation to the national flag.
Previously limited to national holidays, the flag can now be displayed and used on every day of the year, subject to restrictions that ensure respect and dignity.
The guidelines state that the flag should be flown between sunrise and sunset unless it is appropriately illuminated at night.
