International Yoga Day 2023: Also known as World Yoga Day, International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21 every year. It holds historical significance and carries immense cultural and spiritual value.

International Yoga Day: History

The proposal to observe International Yoga Day was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi  during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in September 2014. He suggested June 21 as International Day of Yoga, as it coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

The proposal received overwhelming support, and on December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. This declaration aimed to promote and raise awareness about the numerous benefits of practising yoga worldwide.

International Yoga Day: Significance

Health and well-being: Yoga is an ancient practice that promotes physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It combines physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation, and relaxation techniques to harmonise the body, mind, and soul. International Yoga Day highlights the importance of incorporating yoga into daily life for maintaining good health and overall well-being.

Cultural exchange: International Yoga Day has become a global platform for people of different cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs to come together and celebrate the universal practice of yoga. It promotes cultural exchange and understanding, fostering unity and harmony among diverse communities worldwide.

Global yoga movement: The observance of International Yoga Day has played a significant role in popularising and spreading the practice of yoga worldwide. It has encouraged individuals, communities, and organisations to embrace yoga as a holistic approach to self-care and personal growth. The day serves as a catalyst for the global yoga movement, promoting its accessibility and inclusivity.

Environmental awareness: June 21st being the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, International Yoga Day also emphasises the connection between nature and human well-being. It highlights the importance of living in harmony with nature and encourages sustainable practices to preserve the environment.

International Yoga Day 2023: Theme

“Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” is the theme for this year's International Yoga Day 2023, which beautifully captures our shared aspiration for “One Earth, One Family, and One Future.” From the United Nations headquarters in New York, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the global celebration of yoga this year.
