International Mother Language Day 2024: Every year on February 21, International Mother Language Day is celebrated globally to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and to highlight the importance of preserving and promoting mother languages worldwide.

International Mother Language Day emphasises the need to protect and promote indigenous languages, many of which are endangered, and to ensure that everyone has access to education and information in their mother tongue.
Every year, International Mother Language Day is observed on February 21, this year, the special day falls on a Wednesday.
Theme of International Mother Language Day 2024 for this year is “Multilingual education – a pillar of learning and intergenerational learning” which highlights that the mother tongue languages are vital for inclusive education and safeguarding indigenous languages. Initiating education in mother tongue and gradually incorporating other languages helps in fostering effective learning.

International Mother Language Day was first announced by the General Conference of the UNESCO in November 1999 but it was formally recognised by the UN General Assembly in its resolution of 2002. It was Bangladesh that had put forward this idea to celebrate one’s mother language.
International Mother Language Day celebrates linguistic diversity, promoting the preservation and recognition of mother tongues worldwide. It commemorates the Language Movement in Bangladesh and emphasises the importance of multilingualism for cultural identity, inclusivity, and peace. The day fosters awareness and respect for indigenous languages, advocating for their protection and promotion.
