In 1918, a group of Hindi intellectuals and activists founded the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan (Hindi Literary Conference) to promote Hindi as a national language. The Sammelan played an important role in the acceptance of Hindi as India's official language. On September 14, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India declared Hindi, written in Devanagari script, to be the official language.
This decision was made to promote Hindi as India's lingua franca while also uniting the country's different linguistic and cultural regions. The first Hindi Diwas was held in 1953.
