Dhanteras 2024: Dhanteras, which takes place on October 29, 2024, begins the five-day Diwali celebrations. This day, known as Dhantrayodashi, is devoted to Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health and Ayurveda, who is said to have emerged from the ocean at the Samudra Manthan with the elixir of immortality.

The word "Dhanteras" is derived from two words: "Dhan," which means wealth, and "Teras," which refers to the 13th day of the Hindu lunar calendar. Dhanteras paves the way for Diwali, the festival of lights.

Many people purchase gold, silver, and brass utensils, as well as electronic items, to bring prosperity and blessings to the gods.

Interestingly, buying a broom on Dhanteras is also considered very auspicious. While buying precious metals is common, the simple broom holds symbolic value during this festival.

Why is it lucky to buy a broom on Dhanteras?

Buying a broom is considered to keep Goddess Lakshmi from leaving one's home. Bringing a broom home on Dhanteras is also said to help you get rid of your debts and bring pleasure and wealth. Every family uses brooms on a regular basis to keep their homes clean. Cleanliness is considered to attract Goddess Lakshmi. This is why buying brooms during Dhanteras is considered auspicious.

Other items you can buy on Dhanteras

Gold and silver coins

Gold or silver coins with Lakshmi-Ganesh etched on them are among the most popular Dhanteras purchases. Precious metal coins are more affordable than gold jewellery, which is expensive. The purchase is auspicious, and the coins may be placed in the puja area.

Gold/silver jewellery

People wait all year to buy valuable jewellery on Dhanteras so they can enjoy the spiritual benefits of this auspicious day. Purchasing gold jewellery is an investment in itself, which makes it feel much more expensive. Gold jewellery is essential for Indian occasions such as weddings, so get it on these auspicious days to infuse even more heavenly benefits.

Utensils

What appears to be a more ordinary purchase for practical reasons has a deeper spiritual significance. Dhanteras represents renewal and warding against evil. The kitchen is an important area for running the household and preparing food, therefore replacing the utensils brings prosperity and benefits into the home. It is also said that Goddess Lakshmi blesses food prepared using Dhanteras utensils.
