Kashmiri Separatist leader Yasin Malik gets life term in terror funding case

New Delhi, May 25: A Delhi court awarded life imprisonment to Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik in a terror funding case on Wednesday. Earlier, Malik had pleaded guilty to all the charges, including those under the rigorous Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The NIA court has also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Malik. The separatist leader was sentenced to life imprisonment twice, one for waging war against the nation and one in UAPA sec 17 raising funds for terror activities. "Two life imprisonments have been given to Yasin Malik, besides that 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in 10 offences and Rs 10 lakh penalty, all the punishments will run concurrently," informed Advocate Umesh Sharma. Yasin Malik gets life Earlier on the day, the NIA sought the death penalty for the Kashmiri separatist. The agency told Special Judge Praveen Singh that Malik was responsible for the Kashmiri exodus. Meanwhile, the amicus curiae appointed by the court to assist Malik sought minimum punishment for Malik i.e., life imprisonment in the matter. I will accept the hanging. With seven Prime Ministers, I have worked." Yasin Malik gets life term On the demand by NIA for the death penalty, the separatist leader said, "I will not beg for anything. The case is before this court and I left on the court to decide it." On May 10, Malik informed the court that he would not contest the charges filed against him, which included Sections 16 (terrorist act), 17 (raising funds for the terrorist act), 18 (conspiracy to commit terrorist act), and 20 (member of terrorist gang or organisation) of the UAPA, as well as Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 124-A (sedition) of the IPC.
