Washington DC, July 13: US Congressperson Shri Thanedar from Michigan has introduced the HR 9023 legislation, known as the Keep STEM Graduates in America Act. This Bill aims to allow students to remain in the US after completing their studies by making changes to the H-1B visa process and increasing the number of available visas each year.

Congressman Thanedar emphasised the significant contributions of foreign students in technology and science to overall innovation and growth. Drawing from his own experience as an immigrant who benefited from educational opportunities in the US, he stressed the importance of retaining talented students in the country.

"The Keep STEM Graduates in America Act will help retain graduates by expanding the availability of H-1B visas and simplifying the process to obtain one. This is a crucial step toward a future where the most innovative students can contribute to the US," said Thanedar.

He also acknowledged the difficulties associated with acquiring an H1-B visa after graduation, noting the troublesome deadlines that dictate a student's stay in the country. The proposed Bill includes provisions for extending these deadlines.

The Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) welcomed the legislation. In a post on X, FIIDS expressed appreciation for Thanedar's efforts to retain STEM-educated foreign graduates in the US, highlighting the potential benefits for Indian and other international students facing the green card backlog.

Thanedar believes that every student deserves ample time to find suitable employment and determine the best workspace for their skills. "This bill is just one of many I support because it brings us closer to a more equitable world while strengthening the economy for Americans and Michiganders," he said.

Khanderao Kand, Chief of Policy and Strategy for FIIDS, praised the bill, stating that it would benefit hundreds of thousands of Indian and millions of foreign students by providing extensions in Optional Practical Training. This additional time will allow graduates to find appropriate job opportunities and contribute to US technology and the economy.
